How to create your own sketching tour.

Firstly grab yourself a decent sketchbook with good quality cartridge paper, a HB pencil, an eraser and a pen (fine liner or biro). You’re now ready to go and explore the world around you. I like to go to a place that is quiet, that might be a corner in your garden, a field nearby or a favourite spot you like to visit on a walk. Take some supplies with you as in tea and cake, no one wants to draw on an empty stomach! Use the time to sit peacefully and focus on the wonders of nature around you, ask yourself - what do you want to capture in this moment?

I would recommend starting with something small scale first, especially if this your first time such as a daffodil or a leaf fallen from a nearby tree. Focus on the details of your object use a pen first as this means you can’t rub it out and challenges you to be more expressive with your hand movements, freeing up your sketching style. Time yourself on the drawings working from 5 minutes, 10 minutes to 30 minutes. This will help build up your confidence with the shape and in the 30 minute session allow yourself to become fully submersed in all of the details.

You can annotate your drawings to help make it more personal, writing down the date, location and item. Including if the weather was hot, cold, windy, wet.

You can repeat this process as many times and on as many walks as you like. You will suddenly find you have a beautiful visual journey of life.
