What paints should I buy?

This is a question I get asked a lot. Firstly good quality paints are expensive. You are paying for good coverage, texture and finesse. Buying cheap unbranded paints just does not deliver. They tend to be too watery, don’t offer the coverage and can be more difficult to paint with as a result. I have summarised my favourite brands below and what are good for beginners.

Acrylic Paint

Daler Rowney System 3 - is perfect for beginners and is designed with this is mind. You can buy sets of paint with the essential colours for under £15

Liquitid tex - is for intermediate and professional painters - This brand is more expensive but the coverage and flow is davine. I love the range of colours available

Oil Paint

Windsor and Newton - beautiful colours and excellent quality. Oil paints are more expensive due to processes involved with making this medium. You can buy this as a start set for under £40

Watercolour paint

Windsor and Newton - I would recommend always buying a travel palette rather than tube paints. Tube watercolour paints often make the painter more heavy handed with the use of application, it is also harder to understand and appreciate the addition of water to tube watercolours. You can pick up a travel set with essential 12 colours for usually under £15.

The travel set then means you can take it anywhere with you!
